COVID-19 Patient Dies In Delta Hours After NCDC Reported Case

A coronavirus (COVID-19) patient that was confirmed just yesterday, Wednesday, has been reported dead in Delta State on Thursday.

The State Government confirmed the death of the patient among the five earlier announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday night.

The five new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the State are from Warri South (4) and Oshimili North (1) Local Government Areas of the State.

BIGPEN reports the State Government COVID-19 infographic indicates the death came from Oshimili North counciL, bringing the total number of fatality in the State to 4, with 6 cases already discharged and 13 active ones still in the isolation centres.

Meanwhile, the State Government on Wednesday inaugurated a 100-bed Isolation/Treatment Centre (ITC) at the Permanent Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Issele-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

Secretary to the State Government, Mr Chiedu Ebie, who inaugurated the facility, said that the feat was achieved through a partnership between the state government, the private sector coalition on COVID-19 (CACOVID) and NYSC.

Ebie added that the establishment of the isolation centre was sequel to the directive by the Federal Government to NYSC to make available some of its facilities nationwide for the treatment and management of COVID-19.

He said that Delta was being proactive by not waiting for cases to rise beyond limits before increasing capacity to handle more cases.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Mordi Ononye, said that with the inauguration of the facility, the state’s capacity to deal with the pandemic had been greatly enhanced.

“This is a 100-bed isolation unit. It is fully equipped with mobile X-ray and mobile ultra-sound and every facility required to handle patients that will be treated here even though it was initially designed to be a holding centre.

“We are hoping that with the coming on board of this facility, the capacity of the state’s COVID-19 response team to deal with COVID-19 related issues has been greatly enhanced”, he said.

Ononye also disclosed that the State has begun the process of community testing for the COVID-19 with 19 wards in Udu LGA, while paying special attention on Oshimili South and Oshimili North LGAs.

In a vote of thanks, representative of CACOVID and Zonal Manager of Zenith Bank Plc, Mr Lucky Ighade, thanked the state government for their handling of the COVID-19 assuring that more support would be given in the nearest future.
