Scores Trapped, Many Houses Destroyed As Explosion Rocks Lagos

Several residents including students have been reported trapped and many houses destroyed after explosion shook parts of Lagos state on Sunday morning.

Citizens report say many part of the cities including Abule Ado, FESTAC, Surulere, Satelite Town, Ijegun, Ikotun, Egbeda, Okota, Isheri Olofin were affected by the explosion.

A resident of Surulere told BIGPEN in a telephone conversation that the massive bang occurred around Abule Ado in Amuwo Odofin local government area of the state.

“It did not quite affect my area but several places in FESTAC and Abule Ado council area were shattered. Many people have been trapped including children and student of a Catholic school”.

In a multiple tweet, Federal Fire Service, said its men are making efforts to get information on the incident.

“We are in touch with our men in Fire Stations around Badagry and Festac, we are trying to gather more information as regards the reported explosion in Lagos State, Nigeria. We are on it,” the service tweeted.

Meanwhile, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), says the explosion which occurred at Abule Ado, Trade Fair axis of Lagos State was not caused by a disruption of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) oil pipeline.

Acting Coordinator, Lagos Territorial Office, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that contrary to information earlier put out on the social media, the explosion which occurred at about 9a.m. was unconnected to pipeline vandalism.

“From the information given by officials of the Lagos State Fire Service who are currently on ground, the implosion is not connected to pipeline but might have occurred in a factory located in the Abule Ado area.

“Emergency responders are on ground while others are still on their way to the scene. The situation is under control and we hope to get more information soon to ascertain its cause,” he added.

He also confirmed that several buildings were affected by the explosion which was heard several kilometers away in many parts of the state including Amuwo Odofin, Ijegun and Agege.

As of the time of filing this report, there were no details of casualty.
