Obaseki Approves N9bn Drainage Project In Benin GRA

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved a N9 billion contract for the construction of integrated drainage system to address flooding in parts of Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Benin City, the state capital, which kicks off in two weeks time.

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, disclosed this after the weekly State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Godwin Obaseki, at Government House, Benin City.

Ohonbamu said among issues discussed at the EXCO meeting was the commencement of the N9bn drainage project to channel flood water through the Giapiona-axis of GRA, Benin City.

He said the project forms part of the Obaseki-led administration’s commitment to deepen infrastructural development in the state.

According to him, “Contractors for the drainage project would be mobilised to site in two weeks time. The project will provide a lasting solution to flooding issues being experienced in the GRA-axis of Benin City.”

Ohonbamu noted that the EXCO enjoined residents of the state to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially during rainy season so as to avoid flood disaster.

“This administration is looking into the issue of waste management. We are carrying a public enlightenment campaign among residents on proper waste disposal so that the people are more conscious of how they dispose waste from their houses, offices and in public spaces,” he said.

The commissioner added that the state government also tasked Edo people to remain peaceful and conduct themselves responsibly as law abiding citizens.

“We hear that many unscrupulous elements want to cash in on the events happening at the Edo House of Assembly and perpetuate violence, but they should be rest assured that every act of violence will be met with overwhelming government response,” he warned.
