The George Uboh Whistleblowers Network (GUWN) has dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to court over the freezing of the bank accounts of Benue and Akwa-Ibom state Governments.

In the underlying affidavit deposed to by its chairman Dr. George Uboh, Uboh, the anti-corruption network states: “Defendant’s unilateral, unfounded, illegal, unconstitutional and partisan freezing of bank accounts of state governments, including but not limited to Benue State and Akwa-Ibom States, smack of corruption and or undemocratic practices hence acts committed by an arm of government which has undermined the public interest”.

Uboh further deposed that: “Plaintiff has accused and defended allegations against the defendant for corruption in the failure to remit N1.993 Trillion to the Federal Government of Nigeria, particularly on August 26, 2015 when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to defend said allegations after which the erstwhile Chairman of Defendant was sacked on or about November 9, 2015 for repeated failures to honor the Senate resulting in the senate issuing a warrant for his arrest”.

He expressed pained that an anti-graft agency whose activities must be non-partisan, which is the globally accepted standard, “would descend to such flagrant disregard for the law, and in so doing deprive states from accessing funds, at the time when those states are having problems with the ruling party, thus giving EFCC’s actions the coloration of partisanship”.
