Pit Collapse Claims 7 Lives In Plateau Mining Community

Seven miners have been killed after a mining pit collapsed on them in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred at about 7pm on Wednesday while the victims were carrying out mining activities at the site.

A resident of the community, Albert Danlami, said the miners were trapped underground after the earth suddenly caved in on them.

According to him, the collapse triggered panic in the community as residents and fellow miners rushed to the site and launched rescue efforts.

Danlami said the miners were eventually found dead, while some other people sustained injuries in the incident.

He said, “The miners were working at the site when the earth suddenly caved in on them. They were trapped underground, and residents and other miners immediately began efforts to rescue them.”

The Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirming the incident, said despite efforts to rescue the trapped miners, they were later found dead.

Vanguard reports that the incident has once again raised concerns over safety measures at mining sites in the state.
