Senator Istifanus Gyang of Plateau North senatorial district, has reacted to reported assassination of a chieftain of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in his constituency reportedly by armed bandits.

BIGPENNGR understands that the party chieftain and one other were killed by gunmen in the Fobur district of Plateau State’s Jos East Local Government Area.

One of the victims has been identified as a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) councillor candidate in the state’s upcoming local government election.

The gunmen suspected to be kidnappers who attacked the neighborhood in the early hours of Friday, June 25, shot the victim dead, according to reports.

Reports say the two young politicians resisted being carried away, and the kidnappers fired shots at them before fleeing the scene when it was discovered that they were dead.

Meanwhile, Senator Istifanus Gyang of Plateau North,  confirming this in a statement signed by his Special Assistant Media and Protocol, Musa Ibrahim Ashom, lamented the ongoing incidence of killings in his constituency.

“The killing of two youngsters in Fobur District, Jos East Local Government, by kidnappers has enraged Senator I.D. Gyang of Plateau North.

“One of the victims was a PDP councillor candidate in Plateau State’s upcoming local government elections,” the statement said.

“The senator is outraged by the recent spate of homicides in his district. Terrorists killed 12 people in Kuru, Jos South local government, just last week. These heinous acts put pressure on security forces, which have the responsibility of protecting residents, to step up the fight against crime and criminality in the state. Senator Gyang expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for their souls’ peace, while also asking citizens to be vigilant and attentive of threats to their safety and well-being.

Ubah Ogaba, a spokesman for the State Police Command, confirmed the deaths of two people and said that one person who was kidnapped by the attackers was freed by the police.

“On the 24th of June, 2021, at around 2230 hours, the command received information that one Anap Ajiji Gwom ‘f’ of Resek Village in Jos East LGA had been kidnapped. “A joint team of policemen, Operation Safe Haven, vigilantes, and hunters were quickly despatched to rescue the victim upon receipt of the complaint,” Ogaba claimed.

“When the rescue team saw the kidnappers, they engaged them in a gunfight. Unfortunately, two hunters were killed in the process, and the abductors fled with bullet wounds of varied degrees. The abductee was freed unhurt and has been reunited with her family. An investigation is underway to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of that crime. Any information that will help us with our inquiry will be very appreciated,” he continued.
