American Society Of Safety Professionals Partner Delta On Workplace Safety Enforcement

The leadership of American Society of Safety Professionals, Nigeria chapter has entered into a partnership with the Delta State Government on enforcement of safety at work places.

President of the council, Mrs. Mercy Omoifo-Irefo drop the hint after a courtesy call on the state Commissioners for Science and Technology, Chief Matthew Tsekiri, Hon. Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Prince Emmanuel Amgbaduba and the Hon. Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Oviemuno Oghoore at their different Ministry offices on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th respectively.

She said that the purpose of the visit was to familiarize the association with the ministries with the view of working out modalities for implementation of its set goals on issues of safety which is paramount to people’s daily lives.

Making her presentations, she said that the ASSP is a volunteer, non- profit organization of occupational, safety and health professionals drawn from all walks of life and disciplines.

According to her, ASSP has a chain of members who are dedicated to making the world a safer and healthier place with safety as a cardinal principle that will lead to fewer injuries, sicknesses and fatalities at work places.

Mrs. Omoifo-Irefo noted that ASSP which is a global organization founded in 1911 in the United States and founded in Nigeria in 2007, is currently spread in over 40 countries around the world with more than 40,000 volunteer professionals as members across the globe.

She said that the association is concerned in promoting work place safety and health issues of workers, across the globe.

She also mentioned that ASSP members have continued to work with business owners, employees, regulators, policy makers, legislators at all levels of government on increased work place safety for all.

The courtesy visit, she said, was to encourage the Commissioners respectively on the need for safety and health practices in their various Ministries and beyond.

Mrs. Omoifo-Irefo, a Deltan said that the present executive members of her Nigeria chapter shall embark vigorously on mentorship where retiring professionals in different disciplines and professional fields are made to impact their wealth of on-the-job experience to mentor younger generations in their preferred areas of interests of chosen carriers.

She disclosed that the association would also be creating a World Class ICT state of the art e-library where journals, presentations and lively debates shall be accessed by members and interested parties.

“We will ensure improvement of career development by organizing seminars and talk shops for members of the Ministries as shall be indicated, on workplace SAFETY.

“We will also endeavour to influence the passage of legislative bills from the National Assembly to, across all the states Houses of Assemblies to include SAFETY as a compulsory subject from the primary to tertiary institutions, to fully integrate safety awareness into the populace, as a way of life”.

She therefore solicited for a synergy between the association and the different Ministries on issues of safety concern for members of their staff.

Responding, the different Commissioners promised to synergize with ASSP and her activities in Nigeria especially as it concerns Delta state and her work force.

However, Hon. Prince Emmanuel Amgbaduba summarized by saying that the entire exercise is of invaluable importance to “our daily safety and comfort intertwined.

He therefore enjoined the visiting ASSP executives to do more in driving policy advises and review, safety advocates through electronic and print media, advocating cooperate safety responsibilities through national and states’ information dissemination network and paraphernalia for more effective national awareness.

Meanwhile, the courtesy visit and presentations at the different Ministries were done by strict adherence to the ethics of social distancing as occasioned by the ravaging Covid-19.
