The Lagos State Government has shut down a church in Surulere following complaints by a resident over persistent noise pollution, alleged threats and repeated disruption of his sleep.

The affected facility, The All Christians Gathering Ministry, located at No. 1, Ishola Street, off Clegg, was sealed on Sunday after environmental officials reportedly confirmed violations of the state’s noise pollution regulations.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action in a post on his X account, acknowledging a complaint by a resident identified as DAVERY.

According to Wahab, officials investigated the complaint and established that activities at the church constituted a nuisance to people living in the neighbourhood.

“Following a complaint by @BigDavery regarding noise pollution from a church, our officials conducted an investigation and confirmed that the church was in violation of environmental regulations and constituted a nuisance to residents in the area,” the commissioner stated.

He added that the church had been sealed and would remain closed until further notice.

The closure followed a series of posts by the complainant, who had appealed to the Lagos State Government to intervene over what he described as persistent noise from the religious centre.

In one of the posts published at about 1:31 a.m. on Saturday, the resident shared videos of the disturbance and appealed directly to Wahab for urgent intervention.

He reportedly offered to provide the church’s address privately, citing security concerns.

The complainant also alleged that a member of the church threatened him after he confronted the ministry over the noise.

Raising concerns about the effect on other residents, he said the disturbance was also affecting households with young children, including one with a baby under one year old.

He further lamented that the noise had forced him to keep his windows closed at night despite the heat and lack of electricity to operate a fan.

Reacting to the development, Wahab maintained that the state government would not allow religious institutions, businesses or other establishments to violate environmental regulations at the expense of residents’ comfort and well-being.

Under Lagos State environmental regulations, the permissible noise levels in residential areas are 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night.

The enforcement is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to curb noise pollution and ensure compliance with environmental standards across Lagos.
