President Bola Tinubu has said he signed the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law to accelerate reconstruction, improve infrastructure and unlock the economic potential of the South-East region.

Tinubu said the region’s economic prosperity was critical to Nigeria’s overall development, stressing that the country could not achieve its full economic potential if any part of it remained underdeveloped.

‎The President spoke on Tuesday at the South-East Gas Pipeline Infrastructure Investment Ceremony in Enugu, where he was represented by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.

The SEDC was established to coordinate the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure in the South-East, while addressing ecological challenges and other developmental needs.

Tinubu said the commission was designed to provide sustained institutional support for the region’s development and strengthen its contribution to the national economy.

‎He identified commercial and industrial centres such as Aba, Nnewi and Onitsha as important drivers of economic growth, noting that their development would benefit businesses, create jobs and expand trade across the country.

According to the President, the initiative aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises economic growth, infrastructure development and improved living standards.

He, however, charged the commission to focus on measurable results rather than bureaucracy, saying its performance should be assessed by the investments attracted, infrastructure delivered, jobs created and improvements in the livelihoods of residents.

Tinubu also highlighted the proposed South-East Investment Company as part of efforts to mobilise private-sector capital and support strategic economic projects in the region.

On infrastructure, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to key transport corridors, including the Enugu–Onitsha and Enugu–Port Harcourt roads, as well as supporting infrastructure around the Second Niger Bridge and the Eastern railway corridor.

‎He said improved transport infrastructure would reduce the cost of doing business, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and strengthen commercial activities across the region.

‎The President further highlighted the proposed South-East Gas Distribution Pipeline Project, which is expected to supply gas to industrial and commercial users in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

‎He said improved energy supply could boost manufacturing in Aba, support industrial production in Nnewi and Onitsha, and encourage agro-processing and other businesses across the region.

Tinubu urged South-East governors to work closely with the Federal Government, investors and private-sector operators to ensure that development initiatives translate into tangible benefits for residents.

He called on the commission and its partners to establish clear implementation plans, measurable targets and timelines to ensure accountability.

‎The President said the ultimate goal was to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, attract investment and provide young people with greater opportunities for employment and sustainable livelihoods.
