Nigeria Has No Active Ebola Case After Patient’s Evacuation to Switzerland – WHO
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Nigeria currently has no active Ebola case following the medical evacuation of the infected patient and her husband to Switzerland.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a statement on his official X handle on Monday, noting that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case.
Janabi said the patient and her husband, both Swiss citizens, were evacuated earlier on Monday after Nigerian medical teams stabilised the patient’s condition.
According to him, the patient was clinically stable after receiving treatment in Nigeria, where health workers successfully managed the acute phase of the illness.
He commended the Federal Government, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners for their roles in containing the situation.
Janabi described the development as a remarkable achievement, saying it demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly when countries collaborate to tackle health emergencies.
Despite the evacuation, he stressed that vigilance remained essential, urging authorities to sustain contact tracing, monitoring and other response measures.
He said Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Switzerland would take responsibility for the patient’s continued treatment and monitor the 53rd contact, her husband.
