Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has charged online publishers to prioritise credibility and profitability over mere website traffic.

Aniagwu gave the charge on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, while declaring open the 2026 Annual Conference and 6th Annual Lecture Series of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) at the Ministry of Information Conference Hall, Asaba.

Represented by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Mrs. Stella Macaulay, Aniagwu described the conference theme, “Beyond Traffic: Building Sustainable and Profitable Digital Media Businesses,” as timely and relevant to modern journalism.

He observed that although digital technology has transformed information production and consumption, publishers must look beyond audience numbers and page views to build financially viable and professionally responsible organisations.

According to him, media success should not be measured solely by traffic but by quality journalism, public trust, adherence to ethical standards and ability to create sustainable economic value.

“A profitable media business must equally be a credible media business, one that respects the truth, upholds professional ethics and contributes meaningfully to society,” Aniagwu stated.

He expressed concern over misinformation, disinformation and sensationalism on digital platforms, warning that pressure to publish quickly must not undermine accuracy and fairness.

He urged publishers to explore digital subscriptions, strategic partnerships, responsible advertising, multimedia storytelling and capacity development, stressing that credibility remains the greatest asset of any media organisation.

On democratic governance, Aniagwu described journalists as critical partners in promoting transparency and accountability, noting that the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori through the MORE Agenda recognises effective communication as essential to sustainable development.

Earlier, DOPF Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Enebeli, said traffic generation is important but insufficient to guarantee survival, urging members to transform their audience and credibility into viable business opportunities.

Enebeli said DOPF, registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, will mark its 10th anniversary in May 2027, describing it as one of Nigeria’s established online publishers’ associations.
