CAN Honours Oborevwori With Christian Icon Award At 50th Anniversary
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has honoured Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State with its Christian Icon Award for his commitment to public service and Christian values.
The award was presented by CAN President, Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, during the association’s 50th anniversary celebration at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Saturday.
Okoh said the award is reserved for leaders who demonstrate integrity, excellence and commitment to nation-building anchored on faith and service.
He said Oborevwori’s contributions to national development, rooted in compassion and ethical leadership, have inspired many.
Responding, Oborevwori said the recognition was a call to greater service to humanity.
“My faith and commitment to serving the people and humanity remain strong. When an organisation such as CAN gives you an award, it means a lot because the recognition is based not merely on public service but also on integrity, character and impact,” the governor said.
He urged public office holders to separate politics from service to God, saying politics must not undermine faith.
“We may be involved in politics, but we must be able to distinguish between serving God and playing politics,” he said.
Oborevwori said his commitment to church ushering work started long before he became Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and he sustained it despite advice to quit due to political office.
He also commended CAN for uniting its five blocs, saying their unity would strengthen the Christian community and Nigeria.
The ceremony was attended by former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Speaker Emomotimi Guwor, House of Representatives members Victor Nwokolo, Nicholas Mutu and Jonathan Ukodhiko, Chief of Staff Johnson Erijo and Senior Political Adviser Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, among others.
