Ondo Traditional Chief Shot Dead During Colleague’s Burial Rites
A traditional high chief in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, has been shot dead during the burial rites of a fellow traditional title holder.
The incident occurred while members of the community were gathered for the funeral ceremony of their late colleague.
According to sources, a firearm was discharged during the programme, with the bullet reportedly hitting Akinola in the head.
A source said, “During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death.”
The incident reportedly caused panic and confusion among participants, while the circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear.
Although there were reports that the shooting may have resulted from an accidental discharge, the police have yet to establish the exact cause of the incident.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“One suspect arrested. Meanwhile, thorough investigation has commenced,” Jimoh said.
He added that the investigation would unravel the circumstances surrounding the death and determine responsibility for the shooting.
