JUST IN: Helicopter Crashes in Igbokoda, Ondo State, Several Feared Dead – Police Confirm
Panic has gripped Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, following a helicopter crash in the riverine community on Monday, October 5, 2026.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, said details surrounding the crash were still emerging as efforts to establish the full circumstances continue.
“The Command urges members of the public, particularly residents of Igbokoda and adjoining communities, to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information,” Abayomi said in a statement.
Sources on the ground said the helicopter crashed into a swampy river opposite the Naval Base in Igbokoda, sparking confusion among fishermen and residents.
The Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, also confirmed the crash, adding that military gear was found at the scene.
He said the number of persons on board could not be ascertained yet.
Multiple local reports said several persons on board are feared dead, though no official casualty figure has been released by aviation authorities as of press time.
Emergency responders, police operatives and personnel from the Naval Base have mobilized to the crash site for search and rescue operations.
Due to the swampy terrain, rescue efforts are facing logistical challenges.
Details of the helicopter’s identity, its point of departure, destination and manifest remain sketchy.
