The Delta State Government has assured residents that justice will prevail over the death of Unity Adeda, a Deputy Director in the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori gave the assurance on Monday, while reacting to the circumstances surrounding the fracas at the state Secretariat that reportedly preceded Adeda’s death.

The governor, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, at a send-off ceremony for the immediate past Head of Service, Reginald Bayoko, and other retired senior civil servants, also dismissed fears that the administrative panel constituted by the government could interfere with the ongoing police investigation.

Oborevwori said he would not comment extensively on the incident because the police were still investigating the matter.

“I cannot fully comment on the incident because the matter is under police investigation. I assure all Deltans and residents in the state that justice will prevail,” he said.

The governor explained that the administrative panel was established to determine the circumstances surrounding the fracas at the Secretariat and ascertain whether any civil service rules or regulations were breached.

According to him, the panel’s work would not undermine or frustrate the police investigation, but would instead make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“For the sake of transparency and to avoid suspicion, we made sure there is no politician on the panel. All the members are from organised labour and the Civil Service. So, the fear of a possible cover-up is unfounded,” Oborevwori stated.

The governor also condoled with the Adeda family, describing the incident as a tragedy and urging public servants and residents to exercise restraint even when faced with provocation.

“This tragedy is a cautionary tale to all of us to always exercise maximum restraint and maintain calmness even in the face of extreme provocation. Self-control is the hallmark of maturity,” he added.
