Former Minister of Transportation and ADC vice-presidential candidate, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has dared President Bola Tinubu to reduce petrol price to ₦600 per litre, promising to dump Atiku Abubakar and campaign for Tinubu if he does..

Amaechi, former Rivers State Governor, is running as vice-presidential candidate to Atiku Abubakar under the African Democratic Congress, ADC, for the 2027 election.

Petrol currently sells between ₦1390 and ₦1400 per litre across Nigeria.

Amaechi spoke while reacting to Tinubu’s Independence Day address, in which the president declared that Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity.”

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Amaechi questioned whether Nigerians were already experiencing the economic improvement highlighted by the President.

He said the credibility of the administration’s claims should be measured by the daily experiences of Nigerians, particularly the cost of transportation and essential commodities.

“It is about believability; who do you believe? Go to the 2005 presidential speech; it is the same: we have turned the page, and we are about to start enjoyment,” Amaechi said.

He questioned whether the cost of transportation and other goods had actually declined under the current administration.

“Have you asked one of your staff who goes by transport, how much it costs from Nyanya to Abuja? Has anything come down?

“Has any price come down, has anything changed?” he asked.

Using petrol prices as a benchmark, Amaechi said he was prepared to personally visit a filling station to verify the price.

“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel. I will go myself. If fuel has come down to ₦600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” he said.

Amaechi further challenged anyone who doubted his statement to accompany him with a camera, insisting that he would withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ticket and support Tinubu if petrol sold for ₦600 per litre.

“If you doubt me, come with your camera to my house, and I will go to the filling station and buy fuel, and I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as a vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu, if it has come down,” he added.

Amaechi’s comments come as political parties and presidential candidates intensify their activities ahead of the 2027 general election. He is the ADC vice-presidential candidate on the ticket alongside former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
