Ebola: NCDC Keeps Nigeria on High Alert, Revises Traveller Screening
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has revised its requirements for health declaration forms amid the ongoing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The agency said only travellers arriving from countries with active or relevant EVD transmission may be required to complete the Health Declaration Form as part of enhanced public health surveillance and follow-up measures.
In an interim public health advisory, the NCDC said passengers arriving from all other countries are currently exempt from completing the form.
The agency explained that the decision followed a dynamic risk assessment of the evolving epidemiological situation, as well as consultations with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
The NCDC urged members of the public to remain vigilant and pay attention to symptoms consistent with EVD.
It advised anyone who develops symptoms or has a relevant travel or exposure history to promptly seek medical attention and disclose such information to health authorities.
“Travellers from countries with active or relevant EVD transmission may be required to complete the Health Declaration Form as part of enhanced public health surveillance and follow-up measures,” the agency stated.
The NCDC said Nigeria remains on high alert, with preparatory activities ongoing to strengthen the country’s readiness to prevent and respond to potential cases.
It added that the measures would continue to be reviewed based on developments in the epidemiological situation and the outcome of ongoing public health risk assessments.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians through evidence-based surveillance, preparedness and response to public health threats.
