NPC Chairman Aminu Wushishi Dies After Brief Illness

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died after a brief illness.

Wushishi reportedly passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, with news of his death reaching Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.

His death has sparked mourning among his associates, political allies and stakeholders across Niger State and beyond.

Confirming the development, Wushishi’s Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, told Vanguard that the NPC chairman had died.

“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu said.

Wushishi, a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reportedly took ill shortly before his death.

The Digital Rector of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, Amb. Ibrahim Umar Kontagora, also expressed sadness over the death, describing it as a painful loss to the Kontagora Emirate, Niger State and Nigeria.

In a condolence message, Kontagora described Wushishi as a distinguished personality whose contributions to public service and humanity would remain part of his enduring legacy.

He said, “His passing is a great loss not only to his immediate family and loved ones, but also to the people of Kontagora Emirate, Niger State, and Nigeria at large.”

Kontagora prayed for the repose of Wushishi’s soul and asked Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

He also prayed for strength and patience for the deceased’s family, colleagues, friends and the entire Kontagora Emirate to bear the loss.

Wushishi officially assumed office as Chairman of the National Population Commission on December 2, 2025.

Before his appointment, he had built a strong academic and public service background and was involved in various roles in Niger State and beyond.

He succeeded Nasir Kwarra as NPC chairman.

As of the time of filing this report, further details on the circumstances surrounding Wushishi’s death and his funeral arrangements were yet to be announced.
