Eighteen people have been confirmed dead and 21 others injured after a heavy truck conveying passengers and goods plunged into a deep ditch at Wuya Village in Bida Local Government Area of Niger State.

The fatal accident occurred late Tuesday night while the truck was travelling from Lagos to Kano.

Eyewitnesses said the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel in Bida responded promptly to the crash but could not rescue those who died.

Confirming the incident, the Niger State FRSC Sector Commander, Aishat Saadu, clarified that the vehicle did not fall into a river as initially reported, but into a large ditch capable of submerging the truck.

“The incident occurred at Wuya Village and it is not a river but a ditch. The ditch is big enough for the vehicle to submerge,” Saadu said.

She disclosed that only two of the occupants escaped without injuries, while the 18 deceased victims were taken to the mortuary.
