”They Will Come After Us Next” — Atiku Sounds Alarm on ‘Assault on Opposition Political Parties’
Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congres( ADC), Atiku Abubakar has alleged that there is a coordinated effort to prevent the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from participating in the 2027 general election, describing the alleged move as a threat to Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said he had received credible information suggesting that elements within the ruling establishment were pursuing political and legal measures aimed at excluding the ADC from the ballot.
He alleged that the opposition party had become the primary target because it represents what he described as the most credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC.
”If the APC is truly confident in its popularity, why is it so terrified of the ADC?” Atiku asked.
The former vice president further alleged that neutral institutions were being drawn into partisan politics through what he described as frivolous litigation, selective use of administrative powers and political pressure designed to weaken the opposition.
He accused the government of prioritising political survival over addressing the country’s economic and security challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity and declining purchasing power.
Atiku warned that any attempt to stop the ADC from participating fully in the electoral process would amount to one of the most serious attacks on Nigeria’s democratic order since the return to civil rule.
”The ballot is sacred, and every attempt to tamper with it is an attack on the Republic itself. The desire for change cannot be outlawed. Hope cannot be deregistered. Democracy cannot be subverted by administrative fiat,” he said.
He also called on the judiciary to uphold its constitutional responsibility and resist external influence, while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society organisations and the diplomatic community to remain vigilant against actions capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.
Atiku maintained that no amount of intimidation, judicial manipulation or political pressure would deter supporters of the ADC, insisting that Nigerians must remain vigilant in defence of democratic values.
No official response had been issued by the APC or INEC as of the time of filing this report.
