UPDATED: How Sowore Collapsed, Rescued During Abuja Democracy Day Protest Clash
Human rights activist and Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, reportedly collapsed on Friday following a confrontation between protesters and security operatives during a Democracy protest Day demonstration at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
The protest, organised to draw attention to growing insecurity, economic hardship, and concerns over governance in the country, witnessed a tense standoff after police officers moved to disperse the gathering.
An Eyewitnesses said panic erupted at the venue when security personnel fired tear gas canisters in an apparent effort to break up the demonstration, causing protesters to flee in different directions.
Amid the ensuing confusion, Sowore was said to have collapsed, prompting concern among supporters and fellow protesters who immediately rushed to assist him.
Sources at the scene disclosed that the activist was subsequently taken to an undisclosed medical facility for examination and treatment. Details regarding his condition were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the handling of peaceful demonstrations and the use of force by security agencies during public protests.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the confrontation or Sowore’s reported collapse.
