Alleged N1.18b Financial Misconduct: Assembly Begins Impeachment Processing Against Deputy Gov.

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated an impeachment proceeding against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

The impeachment notice, signed by no fewer than 38 assembly members, was hinged on his alleged involvement in ₦1.18 billion financial misconduct.

The notice was formally presented to the House during its plenary on Thursday, signalling the commencement of the exercise.

Promoters of the proceedings said the exercise was in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which spells out the constitutional procedure for the removal of a deputy governor from office.

As at press time, the deputy governor had not responded to the allegation levelled against him or to the notice of impeachment proceedings before the House. His spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba, could not be reached for comment.

However, political observers in the state are of the view that the impeachment exercise is a direct consequence of the defection episode in the state.

The deputy governor retained his membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), refusing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the governor, a situation many said is in the background of the present exercise by the House.
