‘Maintain Status Quo’ – Court Slams Brakes On Sanusi’s Reinstatement As Emir Of Kano

A Federal High Court has dealt a blow to the planned reinstatement of Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, granting an ex-parte order restraining the Kano State Government from taking such action.

Justice Liman, presiding over the court, ruled: “Parties are hereby ordered to maintain status quo ante the passage and assent of the bill pending hearing of the Fundamental Rights application.”

The court also granted an interim injunction restraining the respondents from enforcing, executing, implementing, and operationalizing the Kano State Emirate Law Council (Repeal) Law.

According to the judge, “In view of the Constitutional and Jurisdictional Issues apparent on the face of the application, parties shall address the Court on same at the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application, which is fixed for June 3, 2024.”

The case was filed by Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba-Dan’Agundi, a traditional title holder, seeking to halt Sanusi’s reinstatement.

The court’s decision has put a temporary hold on the plans to reinstate Sanusi as Emir of Kano, pending the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application.

The case has been adjourned to June 3, 2024,
