ADOKIYE TOMBOMIEYE: A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

Adokiye Tombomieye is a name that echoes with distinction in the Oil and Gas industry in Nigeria. The former Executive Vice President (Upstream) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), recently marked a significant milestone in his career as he officially retired from the company. Throughout his tenure, Tombomieye has displayed remarkable leadership qualities, industry expertise, and a commitment to excellence that has left an indelible mark on the Nigerian petroleum sector.

Armed with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Rivers State University of Science & Technology, Port Harcourt-Nigeria, and bolstered by 30 years of rich experience, he has carved out a reputation for himself as an accomplished and dedicated professional. His prowess is recognized by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE), where he is a fellow of both societies.

Tombomieye is widely regarded as a visionary leader with a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of the upstream petroleum industry. His extensive knowledge and experience in the field have played a pivotal role in shaping the success of NNPCL and its operations. As an Executive Vice President (Upstream), he was responsible for overseeing the exploration and production activities of the company, ensuring efficient resource management, and fostering strategic partnerships with national and international stakeholders.

One of Tombomieye’s most notable attributes is his unwavering dedication to integrity and ethical business practices. He has consistently advocated for transparency, accountability, and adherence to the highest standards of corporate governance within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. Tombomieye’s journey began in 1991 at Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited (EPCL), where he served as a Production Engineer. Here, his expertise was invaluable to the operations of the Polyethylene Plant. Over the course of 14 years, he earned recognition for outstanding contributions, leading to his appointment as the Acting Deputy Manager of Polyethylene/Butene-1 Plants. His successful handling of the Performance Guarantee Test using the Modified Reactor Agitator, despite a ninety percent reduction of the Technical back-up staff, was a testament to his skills and leadership.

Brass LNG was the next chapter in his illustrious career, where he spent over 10 years providing technical support to the Gas and Power Directorate. His unwavering professionalism and technical acumen led to his promotion to a managerial position within the organization.

In 2015, Tombomieye was appointed the General Manager, Commercial in the Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). This marked his transition into the upstream sector of the industry. His dedication and loyalty to NNPC were rewarded when he was promoted to the position of Group General Manager, COMD, in 2019.

The following year saw Tombomieye rise to the position of Chief Operating Officer, Upstream, a role appointed by the President and Commander-in-Chief himself. His current task involves leading the industry’s efforts towards reducing costs and improving revenue for the corporation.

Tombomieye’s commitment to personal growth is evident in his attendance of several technical and management courses from prestigious institutions both locally and internationally. His passion for mentoring has impacted many stakeholders across the Oil and Gas industry, making him a guiding light for many aspiring professionals.

In addition to his professional endeavors, he has also served on the board of various subsidiaries within the corporation such as NPDC, PPMC, Retail, Duke Oil and NIDAS, contributing significantly to board discussions.

Despite his professional commitments, Tombomieye is a dedicated family man, showcasing the same level of commitment and love to his family as he does to his profession. His character is marked by hard work, honesty, dependability, and an unwavering commitment to the growth of NNPC.

As he retires from his position as Executive Vice President, Upstream of the NNPC, Tombomieye leaves behind a legacy of excellence, yet his journey is far from over.
