The minister of Niger Delta Affairs Godswill Akpabio on Thursday kicked off moves to douse tension in the Niger Delta with his trip to Oporoza, headquarters of Gbaramatu kingdom to plead with former militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo.
BIGPENNGR reported that Tompolo had on Sunday issued a seven-day ultimatum to Buhari and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, to reconstitute the NDDC board or face a major breakdown of law and order in the Niger Delta.
However, four days after the ultimatum which causing tension in the region, Akpabio stormed Delta State and was received by the deputy governor of Delta state, Kingsley Otuaro and a Gbaramatu chief, Dennis Otuaro, as well as senior military officers.
The minister is expected to meet with Tompolo to discuss the ultimatum as militant groups in the region have threatened to resume hostilities should the Federal government fail to sack the interim board as well as the Niger Delta Affairs minister.
BIGPENNGR recalls a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank had said that Akpabio has been making overtures towards Tompolo since he gave the ultimatum, expressing optimism that Tompolo will not allow that to happen in the best interest and wellbeing of the people.
