We’ll Search And Fish Out Escaped Edo Prison Inmates – Nigerian Correctional Service

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has vowed to intensified search for inmates of the Oko prison in Benin City who escaped from the facilities with the aid of hoodlums on Monday.

BIGPEN had reported that hoodlums numbering over 100, reportedly broke open one of the cells and freed several inmates in the process.

NCoS spokesperson, AC Njoku who confirmed the attack, said that investigations have begun at NCoS to search for the escaped inmates.

“Custodial centres were attacked this morning by suspected protesters under the #ENDSARS protests in Benin and Oko in Benin,” it said.

It condemned the protesters for their non-peaceful, and violent destructive actions.

Multiple reports say several persons sustained gunshot injuries as hoodlums reportedly engaged officers in a gun duel.

It was learnt that the hoodlums had earlier gathered along Sapele Road beside the prison as early as 7 a.m, setting bonfires and blocking road users particularly motorists.

NCoS, however said that it was yet to established the exact figures of escapees and casualties are yet to be confirmed but that will be communicated after preliminary investigations.

“Efforts are underway to arrest the situation and return normalcy back to the centres. The armed squad personnel of the service is working tirelessly to bring the situation under control,” it added.

Meanwhile, a journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, had PREMIUM TIMES that the jailbreak in Benin was stage-managed by unknown persons.

“This was stage managed, who did this I cannot tell you, because these people are smart. It’s not possible without the collusion of the insiders without proper ammunition,” he said.

“Hoodlums that are not well stocked in terms of ammunition cannot from outside launch a jail break of that magnitude,” he said.

“I read in a report that hoodlums started gathering around 7 am around the prisons. In any prison in Nigeria, once there is unrest outside, any slightest scene of danger outside, what the prison wardens do is to order all inmates back into their cells and they lock them up,” he said.

“The event you saw in the video of the outbreak is not a natural occurrence, I can tell you confidently that that was not a natural occurrence,” he added.

“If these protesters were sighted at 7 am then the prison authorities would have locked the inmates up,” he added.

“This means that if the protesters like, they should break all the walls of the prisons down, the inmates will still be in their cells unable to escape.”

“Another thing is that prisons in Nigeria have security including police officers and wardens with guns.

“The number of people I saw in that video cannot escape without any casualties. It’s not possible that the scores of inmates are running away and no police officer or warden guarding the prisons, who have guns shot at one of them,” he said.
