One Dies As Slab Of Under-construction Building Caves In Delta Varsity
A middle-aged construction worker has been reported dead as a concrete slab of under-construction lecture hall at the Anwai campus of Delta State University (DELSU), near Asaba collapsed.
BIGPEN Online understands that three other persons sustained injuries in the incident which left students in fear of building collapse.
Eyewitness said that the victim was excavating sand beneath the concrete slab when one of the workers unknowingly to him that the slab have not dried stepped on it, leading to the collapse of the portion of slabs on the building.
It was learnt that while the unidentified worker died instantly as a result of the force from the slab, a few others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospital.
The incident was said to have jostled students, lecturers and workers on campus who immediately scampered out of the vicinity for safety.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare who later visited the scene, lamented the death of the worker and the injured.
According to the commissioner, the family of the deceased victim has been contacted while the injured ones have been rushed to the hospital.
Muoboghare explained that the “workers were setting up a concrete slab. It was not dried before one worker mistakenly stepped on it while carrying a load.
“You know when you are setting blocks, it must be allowed to age the concrete must be dried. This has nothing to do with the integrity of the building, as the building is intact.”
