The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Delta State Government to explain the economic value of Delta Line Transport Company to the state since it was concessioned to “God Is Good Motors” (GIGM).

The Council made the call in a communiqué issued after its Congress held in Labour House, Asaba, the state capital and made available to BigPen Online over the weekend.

Signed by the Council Chairman, Messer Michael Ikeogwu and Secretary, Churchill Oyowe, the communiqué held that it was pertinent for Deltans to know the monetary value of the benefits of the concession policy with a view to highlighting how much value has been added to the company and the state economy.

The Council also tasked the state government to urgently address the menace of Fulani Herdsmen across communities in the state so as to forestall a major crisis between herdsmen and indigenes, urging the state government to synergize with relevant security agencies to put an end to the alleged killings by the marauders.

Meanwhile, the council has commanded Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for taking a bold step in re-awarding failed projects at the Asaba International Airport and the deplorable Maryam Babangida Way (Road) in Asaba to a competent contracting firm, Setraco Nigeria Limited.

It also expressed delight over the State Government’s effort at finding lasting solution to the perennial flooding in Asaba through the construction of stormwater drainages and giving priority attention to construction/rehabilitation of major roads in Asaba capital territory.

Furthermore, the council equally appreciated the Delta State Government for linking Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Asaba to the 330 KVA Line which has made public electricity supply to the outfit stable and invariably put an end to epileptic broadcast of programmes to the viewing and listening public.

The communique condemned the attitude of some security agents who wilfully molest members of the NUJ in the course of performing their legitimate duty, explaining that just as the security agents are Constitutional empowered to do their job, that is how Journalists are also backed to carry out their assigned roles. The council added that journalists and security agents should see themselves as partners in progress.

The council nonetheless, urged its members to adhere strictly to the ethics of the journalism profession by ensuring that their reportage are factual, fair, objective and balance and refrain from actions that will either bring the profession to disrepute or cause them disciplinary actions and litigations.
