Suspends IGP, CDHR Tells President Buhari

Published

on

To enable a thorough and unbiased investigations into the various allegations raised against him by Senator Isah Misau, the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (,CDHR), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, to immediately order the suspension of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris.

Delta State Chairman of the group, Comrade Kehinde Prince Taiga, who made the call on Wednesday in a chat with newsmen in Warri, stated that the suspension of IGP Idris, had become very critical at this point to avoid undue official interference in the process of carrying out the probe of some of the allegations drew raised by the serving Senator.

He advanced that besides creating an enabling environment for a transparent process of investigation by the Senate Ad -hoc Committee set up to investigate some of the issues raised, the IGP’s suspension would also serve as a parameter to judge the present government’s commitment to the ongoing anti-graft war.

According to him, “this is not the first time some top government’s functionaries in the present administration were being accused and suspended to allow for free, fair and transparent process of investigations by the various committees set up to probe the allegations raised against them by different individuals or groups”.

“We have had a case of corruption against the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Alhaji Babachir Lawal  and he was asked to go on suspension while the probe lasted and even till now that we are still awaiting the outcome of the investigations and the recommendations made by the committee headed by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the man still stands suspended”.

” There was also the case of the former Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi, who was alleged to have been involved in corruption and was immediately suspended by the present government while being investigated before the appointment of another Director General for the agency”.

Taiga said, “If this had been the practice by present government since assumption of office since 2015, why then setting a wrong precedent now that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, who had been fingered in so many corruption cases and professional misconducts by a serving Senator is involved”.

He cautioned the federal government against cover up or any attempt to sweep the matter cover the carpet as it would dent its image before the local and international community, especially as the allegations were made by a Senator conversant with the working of the police force having risen to the position of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) before venturing into politics.

It would be recalled that Senator Isah Misau, representing Bauchi Central Federal Constituency of Bauchi state, in the National Assembly, had recently on the floor of the Senate raised allegations of corruption, mismanagement and professional misconducts against the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, and demanded full probe into his activities since assumption of office.

The Senate had immediately set up an Ad -hoc committee to look into these allegations and report back on its findings.
