IGP Grants NHRC Access To Audit SARS And Police Cells Nationwide

  Inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris has approved the independent audit of detention cells of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) nationwide. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) who requested access to cells in all police commands and formations in Nigeria in order to “oversee human rights situation of detainees”. Several allegations of human rights abuse have been made against SARS operatives and policemen generally. Presently, there is an ongoing campaign on social media to scrap the SARS. The NHRC in a statement encouraged Nigerians to report incidents of police misconduct to its complaints unit. However, the commission was established by the NHRC act, 1995 as amended to deal with all matters relating to promotion, protection and enforcement

President Buhari Nominates Ojukwu As Human Rights Commission ES, Requests Senate Confirmation

  President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Anthony Ojukwu as the executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). In a report available to BigPen Online, President Buhari had in a letter to the senate which was read by Senate President, Bukola Saraki nominated Ojukwu and requested the senate to confirm the nominee according to the act of the commission. “In accordance with provisions of section 8 of the National Human Rights Commission amendment act 2010, I have the pleasure to present Mr. Anthony Okechukwu Ojukwu as the executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission by the senate. Please find attached copies of his curriculum vitae". Mr. Anthony Ojukwu once confirmed by the senate will take over from Mrs. Oti Ovrawah who has been the Ag
