PDP Now Majority In Senate As Melaye, Kwankwaso, 13 Others Defect

Nigeria’s main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) now in majority in the senate as Senator Dino Melaye of the Kogi West Senatorial District, former Governor of Kano, Rabiu Kwankwaso and 13 other Senators defected from the ruling party, APC.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki announced their defection during plenary on Tuesday in a joint letter them forwarded to the senate leadership.

The letter read: “We hereby inform that we are changing our political affiliation from APC TO PDP. We thank you for your exemplary leadership”.

Part of the letter says the defection was after due consultation, with their constituents and stakeholders in the constituency, in proper recognition section 16 (1G) of the 1999 constitution, and for the fact of our (former) party, the All Progressives Congress.

The decampees are: Senators Dino Melaye, Barnabas Gemade, Ibrahim Danbaba, Shaaba Lafiaji, Mohammed Shitu, Rafiu Ibrahim, Suleiman Hunkuyi Isa Misau, Monsurat Sunmonu, Soji Akanbi, Usman Nafada, Musa Kwankwaso, Suleiman Nazif, Lanre Tejuosho.

With the latest development, the PDP becomes majority in the Senate.
